The 30 that my friends & I sent helped. She was going to start sewing them together as of August 3rd.
As you have probably guessed my plan of two hours a night did not work. My life keeps interrupting my quilting. I did finally complete the charity quilt. First here is the one Joyce quilted and Carol did the binding. Thank you so very much ladies!!! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGsS4Uupr1t6zav_yoz4ko-EYD8ry5zseuXYOlnIJmWVMx4SQBmruda_Ni8FMWUw9rbW6kiOF4J6A_eijEs-Rb7zU-Zl9UK67RbNbV5yFvGuH5BsSIJpGBk2NBdCDUzVEGKVUF9yyJtq5O/s1600/DSC02080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGsS4Uupr1t6zav_yoz4ko-EYD8ry5zseuXYOlnIJmWVMx4SQBmruda_Ni8FMWUw9rbW6kiOF4J6A_eijEs-Rb7zU-Zl9UK67RbNbV5yFvGuH5BsSIJpGBk2NBdCDUzVEGKVUF9yyJtq5O/s320/DSC02080.JPG" /></a></div>
The quilting was done 1\4 inch either side of the seams where the blocks were joined and then around the appliqued hearts and in the ditch both sides of the first border in each block.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYbnrEpDLH1Id0K1I7TUjqlzgkvX-bqcmJwIy_Y55TcxXO6UMh3X4rxu1BZpIEZtJlD9qUrix1efHCT6F_nJMWYWRe3ZnBfv4vhheXZYMAuAGmj43QvFY2ws9onSIGKheaoQS2PmuBjRFX/s1600/DSC02081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYbnrEpDLH1Id0K1I7TUjqlzgkvX-bqcmJwIy_Y55TcxXO6UMh3X4rxu1BZpIEZtJlD9qUrix1efHCT6F_nJMWYWRe3ZnBfv4vhheXZYMAuAGmj43QvFY2ws9onSIGKheaoQS2PmuBjRFX/s320/DSC02081.JPG" /></a></div>
Here is the charity quilt that I quilted and bound.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHg2ieAIeR4JTpphJ5UQsIBNXbosG6p4c7NXS3lX8L870cpTBwY1TnZnVUcyoqnhli2jp2dg2BZwjOYcNHLQ6EdnJc4A9rQN6YXCfbtNjD0OYPsL6LEPUnkdPmZPLPRBVEnZh36usk8c0L/s1600/DSC02073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHg2ieAIeR4JTpphJ5UQsIBNXbosG6p4c7NXS3lX8L870cpTBwY1TnZnVUcyoqnhli2jp2dg2BZwjOYcNHLQ6EdnJc4A9rQN6YXCfbtNjD0OYPsL6LEPUnkdPmZPLPRBVEnZh36usk8c0L/s320/DSC02073.JPG" /></a></div>
I did my quilting in the ditch between the blocks and the first border in each square. Then I quilted around the appliqued hearts. On every other block I quilted diagonal lines both directions . On the alternate blocks I just added eight hearts around the outside border.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5yFstco8Xcr9Wx7uJugBykuEwshwIg0Kg6jwM_F7giDNxnqzwyskLDQA1DGpjnwWsXesOeqIrgTZ2uDyl-YhTgdZ9iz2kFUHv55MNP4dpheZzVm37MRpRRGS1g4AgqVIQMXQ5z3EGbYY/s1600/DSC02075.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5yFstco8Xcr9Wx7uJugBykuEwshwIg0Kg6jwM_F7giDNxnqzwyskLDQA1DGpjnwWsXesOeqIrgTZ2uDyl-YhTgdZ9iz2kFUHv55MNP4dpheZzVm37MRpRRGS1g4AgqVIQMXQ5z3EGbYY/s320/DSC02075.JPG" /></a></div>
This shows it fairly well. How about the back?
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuoLUzQUe78nLhAE5YM3w0h9-QCPveQtdmbsmUe4aQjC753Ze13GxrN0NtY_lsyj9lDUt8LUKVIPT28_rtpR3nPAC0vD2UZ2UFLZNPjv3sA9b0ktXV11Rl08SjdQpYtWhVh4xhpRIXGc2L/s1600/DSC02076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuoLUzQUe78nLhAE5YM3w0h9-QCPveQtdmbsmUe4aQjC753Ze13GxrN0NtY_lsyj9lDUt8LUKVIPT28_rtpR3nPAC0vD2UZ2UFLZNPjv3sA9b0ktXV11Rl08SjdQpYtWhVh4xhpRIXGc2L/s320/DSC02076.JPG" /></a></div>
With the charity quilts out of the way, I finally got back to my tulip garden wall hanging.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJj2r7XfQOLtrFj4f6eQVhqDsxe74yG0u0rA5lz00BEx7yF5zTYhvEWebMvy0MFMg0vuCnzbDGRoa5q-r6bAKTAZtMy26WZmNCLSVcCs__cEpRxP7KGQj3R-VjNzS8ylAYmtMBU6vRNmG8/s1600/DSC02083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJj2r7XfQOLtrFj4f6eQVhqDsxe74yG0u0rA5lz00BEx7yF5zTYhvEWebMvy0MFMg0vuCnzbDGRoa5q-r6bAKTAZtMy26WZmNCLSVcCs__cEpRxP7KGQj3R-VjNzS8ylAYmtMBU6vRNmG8/s320/DSC02083.JPG" /></a></div>
This is the main body of it. I have two more borders to add and hope to get those on this week.
We have decided to add a puppy to our family. We pick him up on August 17th and are rather excited.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirlUDUByuRt2fkqlAlWys5DsmXUbo6U0yWC-COzEQ4iU3pE7p3P2pjuKSg7jNPujZZxTeZ-Xbjy0er-Ery5KFY5Tnh4zqCSXC-KlGUC9e9Y5E6jUrLH2PPKKtryf2SqmO4V_thf8zIbbxM/s1600/Orange+Boy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirlUDUByuRt2fkqlAlWys5DsmXUbo6U0yWC-COzEQ4iU3pE7p3P2pjuKSg7jNPujZZxTeZ-Xbjy0er-Ery5KFY5Tnh4zqCSXC-KlGUC9e9Y5E6jUrLH2PPKKtryf2SqmO4V_thf8zIbbxM/s320/Orange+Boy.jpg" /></a></div>
His kennel name was Orange Boy. His actual name will be Max, short for Mad Maxx (Max to the extreme). He is a medium size Labradoodle. I have a feeling that he just might slow my quilting down. Oh well, it has been really slow this year anyway, so can't get much slower.
We also just finished watching the final matches of the Rogers Cup Tennis and have Cincinnati to look forward to this week, then in two weeks the US Open. It is a good thing that I am doing some applique work in front of the TV. I am back to my two fabric Hawaiian style zebra from the Pacific Rim Company that has been on the go off & on for the last two years. I might just manage to stick with it this time!
I hope you get some time for your quilting this week! Have a good one!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-21241625594341570962013-07-21T21:10:00.000-04:002013-07-21T21:18:07.293-04:00July Already?I don't know where the time is going. Gardening, housework, etc. all continues to need doing. July is over half over and I don't have anything to show for it other than some pictures. The bags and pillows got finished for the cancer group at our local hospital. Then it was on to a new charity project.

I have been working on some "slabs" as in <i>Sunday Morning Quilts</i>. Cheryl put the call out for these blocks that she would sew together, have quilted by volunteer long-arm quilters and then get them bound at a binding party with all her sewing friends helping. I made the above 10 and then made one more purple one, but forgot to take another picture. Cheryl lives in Calgary & is going to see that the finished quilts go to people who lost everything in the Calgary and area floods.

A friend of mine made these nine.

Some members of my quilt guild made these! Sue at thimbles & things donated backing & everything got sent off to Cheryl today. According to Canada Post she should have them by Friday. I hope so as the deadline is July 30th.
Now I can get back to the quilting of one of the charity quilts. The other one got quilted by a friend and bound by another friend. It was lovely to see it finished. I will take pictures of both when I get the second one done.
It will be really nice to get back to sewing for myself & my family again. Maybe in a couple of weeks! Oh, my friend & I did get signed up for the classes we want to take at the Houston International Quilt Festival at the end of October. I have my confirmation already! We are going to be away for seven days, six nights. I am really starting to get excited!
I hope you all get time to do some sewing this week. I am going to push myself and try to get two hours done every night. At that rate I should be able to get back on track! I will let you know next week!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-72919309700017848522013-05-20T20:07:00.000-04:002013-05-20T20:12:39.771-04:00Different ThingsIn the past two weeks I have not worked on my tulip wall hanging (fabric from my sister arrived on the Tuesday after my last blog post) or my block of the month bed quilt. I had to get ready for guild. I managed to get the fabric cut out for six pillow & bags to go to the Cancer Clinic here in Orillia. We spent the last part of the meeting getting lots of bags & pillows sewn. Four of my pillows are done, but I still have two more plus all the bags to do. I promised them for the next meeting. This also meant that I didn't get last years charity quilt blocks sewn together. That I managed to do today. It took me over two hours this morning to get them squared up and ready to sew. The sewing I started right after lunch and finished around five PM.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifABl24Jm8ENthZTBGQ4xu4wTeXKuFmdGxwKS6OvTp4G59kXS_Lri-cP85trHpMey21MXTogy3qhAllNa1HAtuyKR4G7xHacfd91_yywgm6d0jASUGQ7EEMNL4q7533C1X8KeYi5HJXhSz/s1600/DSC02035.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifABl24Jm8ENthZTBGQ4xu4wTeXKuFmdGxwKS6OvTp4G59kXS_Lri-cP85trHpMey21MXTogy3qhAllNa1HAtuyKR4G7xHacfd91_yywgm6d0jASUGQ7EEMNL4q7533C1X8KeYi5HJXhSz/s320/DSC02035.JPG" /></a>
This is the one I had to sew all the blocks together after squaring them up.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcTy9cZru9IsYFCNGr1AWc_4pwMzK3L95K0ZZBRtv_9iCfRfWQcFFp_Fd-D-jTc68G7jDo8ZkX_N65aO-YcjnsJ0ld94x3M7KDXPzC5eHu3eGJPjOJAK6Irk4_TExNOv0f0nuyiedBgyMd/s1600/DSC02037.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcTy9cZru9IsYFCNGr1AWc_4pwMzK3L95K0ZZBRtv_9iCfRfWQcFFp_Fd-D-jTc68G7jDo8ZkX_N65aO-YcjnsJ0ld94x3M7KDXPzC5eHu3eGJPjOJAK6Irk4_TExNOv0f0nuyiedBgyMd/s320/DSC02037.JPG" /></a>
This one had four rows completed, so I just had to sew on the top row. I think that I will quilt one of these and see if I can talk someone else into doing the other one. I really want to get back to my own projects. We also learned how to make a new square, from two 10" squares of fabric. Mine is the orange one and I have four others that got completed at guild. We have asked that they all be completed for next month. We will have a draw & the winner gets all the blocks. This will go nicely with our Christmas in June theme, as some lucky person will receive over twenty completed blocks, all colour coordinated, as the colours are all from one "layer cake" package (10" x 10" squares precut), with all the white on white fabric the same. They work out to be about 12" square.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkOoSQpaExAZI9hcbHqa9pPPCEtODtF_WLTh9fBFzAiNjB5uIYqC9T3jtfpSU0OmCiEI-D2pH1zL8m2mPEuhMspo_CRCF82sEoj9dbKa5188SwjZ8J4Mgk0qTN6_DuJgwi-If7-vBi81zl/s1600/DSC02039.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkOoSQpaExAZI9hcbHqa9pPPCEtODtF_WLTh9fBFzAiNjB5uIYqC9T3jtfpSU0OmCiEI-D2pH1zL8m2mPEuhMspo_CRCF82sEoj9dbKa5188SwjZ8J4Mgk0qTN6_DuJgwi-If7-vBi81zl/s320/DSC02039.JPG" /></a>
These blocks haven't been trimmed yet, but it gives you an idea of what they look like.
It has been a busy weekend with gardening Friday and Saturday, a bit of housework on Sunday and then sewing on the holiday Monday. I don't know how I managed to read all of Dan Brown's new book that I just purchased Thursday night. I didn't even start it until Friday night as I was determined to finish "The Historian" first. I also managed to get the first four rows of my afghan sewn together while watching the final matches of the Italian Open Tennis from Rome. Now you know the truth of why I was not more productive in the past two week in my quilt studio! I will take a picture of the afghan when it is finished! I probably won't have anything to show you next week, as I will be away to my sister's Friday & Saturday and then have a date with my youngest daughter on Sunday, to pick up some annual flowers to add a bit more colour to my perennial gardens. It should be safe to plant them outside by then. Have a great couple of weeks and enjoy whatever you are up to!

Life kept interfering!
My lawn is dethatched and raked, my baseboards have all been cleaned, my cold air return grates have all been washed, laundry is done and I don't know what all! I was good!
I did get the squares and sashing sewn together for last year's block of the month project.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq1-ztoFsVt4mKWS2Ppy1uC4RfMPbnNwiN-aw9rFWnaQhj296SDBMbzpd-Jdn0GcVIjT7EoR2nkCd1lmeIZ9_gbLzddPLZ9FRsBKwt4yYAuVbfVhkzjzVZfo6ZzDfY25M8B84FZUzrWC1p/s1600/DSC02025.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq1-ztoFsVt4mKWS2Ppy1uC4RfMPbnNwiN-aw9rFWnaQhj296SDBMbzpd-Jdn0GcVIjT7EoR2nkCd1lmeIZ9_gbLzddPLZ9FRsBKwt4yYAuVbfVhkzjzVZfo6ZzDfY25M8B84FZUzrWC1p/s320/DSC02025.JPG" /></a>
The left side is actually the top. Now I just need to add two or three borders. I haven't decided on how many yet. The pattern calls for two, but since I am turning a twin into a queen size quilt, I may need a third border. I am thinking of putting a border of the sashing fabric, then a brown, the same as the corner stones and then the fancy sunflower fabric that has all the colours that are in the blocks. I will be checking on the required size this week and then make my decision.
My tulip wall hanging has been put on hold by Canada Post & Storage Company. My sister mailed the additional fabric that she thinks might work for a border last Tuesday. It hasn't arrived yet, so Canada Post must have decided to store it for a while.
Oh well, as my sister didn't pay very much for storage, it should be arriving soon. Canada Post wonders why so many people have stopped using its services. Any guesses?
London to Orillia is four hours by car, so why six days for the mail to arrive, assuming that it gets here tomorrow? I will keep my fingers crossed, as I really want to finish my quilted garden before I have to work on the real thing!
It is back to work for me tomorrow. I am going to try to get the borders for the block of the month quilt cut this week and hopefully sewn on next weekend. I still have to buy the backing for it, but already have the batting.
Have a good week!Happy quilting!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-4823671173211468662013-04-28T20:13:00.002-04:002013-04-28T20:13:46.234-04:00Sashing!!!!My sister came up with what I think is the perfect sashing for my tulips! What do you think?

Isn't she amazing? She found it, bought it & mailed it to me. I took the above picture and e-mailed it to her. The pattern calls for the outside border to be the same fabric as the sashing. So I had laid it out with some showing at two of the edges. That is when she told me that she thought that the border should be slightly darker. I looked all over my area and she looked all over her area & we decided that there is no such fabric! I did manage to find a blue and purple one that I liked with it in the store. When I got home & laid the whole thing out I decided it was too dark. What I am going to do is put a little quarter inch flap of it in between the garden and the border. Once I have that done, I will make the decision on what colour to bind it with. I am thinking the blue & purple, but will wait and see.
I really didn't get any other sewing done this week. The end of my busy work season ends on Tuesday. I have asked if I can catch up my statutory holidays Wednesday & Thursday and go back to my usual Fridays off. At this point I think that is going to work out. I will end up with five days off in a row. I hope to catch up on my sleep and do some serious sewing! I will just have to wait & see how it works out.
I hope you all have enough time to get some sewing done this week. Very soon we will all be busy with our real gardens, so I hope to have my tulip wall hanging up on my wall by them! Have a good week!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-6115768968851918642013-04-21T20:05:00.001-04:002013-04-21T20:05:58.595-04:00Still No SashingI still don't have sashing that I like for my tulips. I have taken them into two other quilt stores and was convinced that I had found something good, only to find when I got home that it wasn't right. Oh well! I did finish my project for guild.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPzI13j6peJKAYZ891x_Sp1PKJbhjQtMA_trSDRDWgyPk6apB6BWO8Rewjz_t6xMWwisNo1TpiAay99HmB2lbcgWniyv8u5LWhx6TaXmgXtpRnKWsyJJH-Md6BB2Smz3doi3ks3w6Ozn7O/s1600/DSC02015.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPzI13j6peJKAYZ891x_Sp1PKJbhjQtMA_trSDRDWgyPk6apB6BWO8Rewjz_t6xMWwisNo1TpiAay99HmB2lbcgWniyv8u5LWhx6TaXmgXtpRnKWsyJJH-Md6BB2Smz3doi3ks3w6Ozn7O/s320/DSC02015.JPG" /></a>
It is a mug carrier, to take my mug to guild! I am pleased with the way it turned out. I can't decide if I want to shorten the laces or not. I just tied the ends together in a single knot until I decide. Then I will trim them or not, but will finish the ends so they won't fray.
Until I find some sashing for my tulips, I started sewing the sashing on my block of the month blocks from last year. This sashing I like!

Do you remember these? It has been a while. They are just Thangles Buck a Block Series #8. I am pleased with the way the corner stones make a pattern with the corner triangles. The brown is just some leftovers I had from a wide backing that I used a few years ago. In case you really have forgotten here are the two borders I am going to use.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRAdckoaNO5CCxVCLgBo-vsQYSoDj4HwwscWfNMArKDmwnUAKx4vmxw9vDtK5RbZ0V4EqFs1EpH8mTTItNnbCNJBz4rq3WLZQKvg-yNgx1YQP1DEb3DKxKf7GgG0tsoU-9AZACz9gWFqHi/s1600/DSC01901.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRAdckoaNO5CCxVCLgBo-vsQYSoDj4HwwscWfNMArKDmwnUAKx4vmxw9vDtK5RbZ0V4EqFs1EpH8mTTItNnbCNJBz4rq3WLZQKvg-yNgx1YQP1DEb3DKxKf7GgG0tsoU-9AZACz9gWFqHi/s320/DSC01901.JPG" /></a>
I did make six extra blocks from the leftovers from the rest of the blocks. I also did the border around each square wider, as is the sashing. The borders are going to be wider as well, turning a 67" x 93" quilt into a queen size.
Have a good week and I hope we all get some time to sew!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-14451486151214282162013-04-07T20:16:00.001-04:002013-04-07T20:16:01.776-04:00Colour ProblemI am rather out of sorts at the moment. I managed to fall and break two ribs last week. NOT TOO BRIGHT!!! Then, I am not sure if I like the sashing colour that I had picked out. I think it is too dark. That is a real problem!

Maybe a close-up will help me decide.

How about a different colour flower?

If you could picture the sashing with rail fence quilting and even some thread play on the rails it might be OK. To bad I didn't just want an OK wall hanging. Of course if done right it could be better than OK. I just can't make up my mind. I should know better than to even try when I am tired & cranky. I had better leave it for a week or so and then try again. It is just too hard to scramble around changing the background as I am not cutting any more sashing strips until I am happier with the colour.
Anyway, I need to make a different project for my next guild meeting in a week and a half. We had a free motion quilting expert in to speak at our last meeting. I need to free motion quilt four 8 1/2" squares and get them sewn together and the backing on to make a finished 16" square. This is to practice free motion quilting and to have a 16" square to use in a craft at the next meeting. No, I am not putting my tulips away or I might never get them out again. I am going to let them stare at me for the next week or so & see if inspiration hits. I hope you are having better luck at whatever project you are working on. You could leave me a comment, telling me which colour you like better for the sashing! Hopefully, I will be less cranky by next week. Have a good one!

That is all eight that I needed to make. I also got the cornerstones for the sashing picked out and cut. Now I just have to get the sashing cut and I will be all set for the next time I have a bit of spare time.
The dishwasher is cleaning up after a good dinner, the laundry is done and put away. I am free to do a bit more on this project before I have to get to bed. The five in the morning alarm seems to come very early some days as I am sure that it will tomorrow.
While I am cutting sashing out, I will be adding the pieces to my design wall, along with the 17 different coloured cornerstones. I am not sure if the flowers are in their final arrangement. I will have to play around a bit to be sure. At least I have a photo of this arrangement in case I want to go back to it.
Have a good week of sewing!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-65810799643023706552013-03-24T16:36:00.001-04:002013-03-24T16:36:44.909-04:00Another Tulip Has SproutedJust one more tulip has sprouted in my private garden in my sewing room.

Aaah...that's better. I'm afraid that my garden is growing very slowly. I just hope that I manage to get it all done by the time the real gardening starts towards the end of May. Let's see...5 more blocks, 17 corner stones, all the sashing, 8 set in triangles, 4 corner triangles, at least one border, all the quilting and then the binding. I am not sure if I will make it or not. Also, I have to add in 4 - 8 1/2 inch blocks with my very own free motion quilting for the third week in April for guild. I think it just may be a busy week or four.
Have a good week sewing! I hope you are working on something that you really enjoy!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-11684217448681163192013-03-17T21:05:00.000-04:002013-03-17T21:05:50.606-04:00One More FlowerI only had time to make one more flower this week.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyjHrm00rYSqWZ853_jVE03YWXTz4LHYlwYeM7gB6NfHrnwqFUTeQej1DxaIlcHfrxyP9QxuBAAIkD_NcNsxhuXUxud8rynfn2_leRH5SiYvgaVarHihlofxGp7kyfNpvR8eAIcDGPHj4F/s1600/DSC01989.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyjHrm00rYSqWZ853_jVE03YWXTz4LHYlwYeM7gB6NfHrnwqFUTeQej1DxaIlcHfrxyP9QxuBAAIkD_NcNsxhuXUxud8rynfn2_leRH5SiYvgaVarHihlofxGp7kyfNpvR8eAIcDGPHj4F/s320/DSC01989.JPG" /></a>
I guess it is time to show you the material I have for sashing. I just can't decide which direction to cut it. Should the wavy stripes be up and down like a picket fence or
sideways like a rail fence? I am having trouble deciding.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyuz3DRPHdIbCDCG_SJOx6UZf5tP1ZAor3FPi17fKnr8ac7J-ixBTjBCGOpqTuOVxkACMXIRiSkeSVDzq7VmcJ1QQvcUqRv0w3EwfUZkf-Lp7idXcFbCHT3Txc5pNaPtewF8fLnz-ZbTlJ/s1600/DSC01990.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyuz3DRPHdIbCDCG_SJOx6UZf5tP1ZAor3FPi17fKnr8ac7J-ixBTjBCGOpqTuOVxkACMXIRiSkeSVDzq7VmcJ1QQvcUqRv0w3EwfUZkf-Lp7idXcFbCHT3Txc5pNaPtewF8fLnz-ZbTlJ/s320/DSC01990.JPG" /></a>
Now, what did I spend my time on this week? I challenged my quilt guild to make fabric name tags back in January. I told them I would give them two months to see what they would come up with, lots of time for me to make one as well. Well I forgot how crazy busy time is at work and almost decided not to make one, then decided that it wouldn't be fair. So I got busy and used the idea of our guild logo. This really isn't cheating because I designed the logo in the first place. Here is the logo.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6BbN47azDtaaapXNCFabmvD03vYLHjVzxPqdp3GuueaUJ5Q11Soe-GxXHRVn6Ig49JszoITifqaaUIVAc1-S-YZEjKQWKg75iiGhkRBJg0eUA2Dj-vmHBdffAEMs24vjjaI6xpS6MwDnf/s1600/Logo+Small.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6BbN47azDtaaapXNCFabmvD03vYLHjVzxPqdp3GuueaUJ5Q11Soe-GxXHRVn6Ig49JszoITifqaaUIVAc1-S-YZEjKQWKg75iiGhkRBJg0eUA2Dj-vmHBdffAEMs24vjjaI6xpS6MwDnf/s320/Logo+Small.jpg" /></a>
Now for my new name tag. What do you think?
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXzpBABEBLCWsGcapOf8HD-1FufvK77qBOLlTuB71qI_cx5Viwtp6Ry35w4qm0djgBYdBvAJq1skJnyz0HIbatKJ0gfE4Abc5CSyIKv-QJBlhlDAQRbFCrOzALPonm7EeZm7jFFUGuMgB/s1600/DSC01997.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXzpBABEBLCWsGcapOf8HD-1FufvK77qBOLlTuB71qI_cx5Viwtp6Ry35w4qm0djgBYdBvAJq1skJnyz0HIbatKJ0gfE4Abc5CSyIKv-QJBlhlDAQRbFCrOzALPonm7EeZm7jFFUGuMgB/s320/DSC01997.JPG" /></a>
It took me quite a while. I don't have an embroidery machine, so all the lettering was just me following the pattern I made with a satin stitch. At least I made one! I feel really good about that. I sewed two metal washers inside it near the top edge and then have a magnetic strip that goes on the back to hold it on. That way I don't end up with pin holes in all my clothes.
It is a busy week for me with two different quilt guild meeting this week on top of 58 hours of work. I am still going to try to get another flower made. I hope you have a good week of sewing!

I know that I have many things on the go, but spring flowers were calling to me. I was supposed to be doing paper pieced flowers, but I just wasn't feeling like it. My sister recommended an older book (from 2004) by Jan Bode Smiley, "focus on Batiks". It had some machine pieced flowers on the cover that just plain talked to me. They said "Make me, make me, make me!!!". So two weeks ago, in a weakened mental state, from working too many hours at work, I bought some fabric. I didn't get to start it until I managed to cut out some of the pieces last night. Here is the first nine inch (finished size) block.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYqOJ-CQz8HUdoj083OzuKgNjp0-2xPVYrZjOx8eALfXsGhhLn7Lxyv7Mo-ZIfHBpEUy8dJvhzQd1RFOLTH-r_cDlxjtMjd-ztu8JU5ZD2IKzOeAv1KzH-ZsJtjfawEInbASAPF-mvOcfV/s1600/DSC01983.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYqOJ-CQz8HUdoj083OzuKgNjp0-2xPVYrZjOx8eALfXsGhhLn7Lxyv7Mo-ZIfHBpEUy8dJvhzQd1RFOLTH-r_cDlxjtMjd-ztu8JU5ZD2IKzOeAv1KzH-ZsJtjfawEInbASAPF-mvOcfV/s320/DSC01983.JPG" /></a>
As you can see they are on point & I am very pleased with it. It was a little difficult to get the angles right, but after a couple of sessions with my seam ripper, I finally got it right. Here is another couple of colourways that I will be making up.

I need eight flowers in all, so will be searching my stash for some variety. I already have the sashing that will go between the squares. This has me excited! It is exactly what I needed to work on as I dream of spring & the end of my busy season at work. I was good and caught up on laundry and housework before sewing today!
Have a good week & I will see if I can manage to have another couple of blocks to show you next week.

Guess what I finally managed to do! These are the pictures that should have been with last Sundays blog! Hopefully this will still work tomorrow when I do my next post!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-52538381400496212302013-03-04T20:32:00.000-05:002013-03-04T20:32:08.493-05:00Still No Pictures!I am still trying to get my pictures uploaded. Here goes! No luck! It looks like they start to load & I get up to five green bars and then it quits. It doesn't matter if I try to load from my computer or from Picasso, it gets to five green bars & quits. My daughter had me make sure to empty my web browser temporary files and make sure to delete all cookies. That didn't work either. I sent my problem in to Google Blogger, but I haven't heard back from them yet and it has been about a day & a half. I will keep trying!

I will try to do better in the future! So what have I been working on? A cross between a pot holder and an oven mitt. So why can't I load a picture of it? Oh it is the new improved blogger!!

OK? I am healthy and quilting. I finally finished the placemats that I was working on back in December.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJUcQNBuEZf07dU3o2RUXqkKWo3Bb2sr4yMKF8cEPYxzmDeelAieGu7tZ0-EAEL3iLXyHZEQ9Km1LP61iuRv5tRkO6ngM79dN61LMz_fB12JUgrE2acwjkvit2CSjX_l3jxkTKAG0rF5T/s1600/DSC01978.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJUcQNBuEZf07dU3o2RUXqkKWo3Bb2sr4yMKF8cEPYxzmDeelAieGu7tZ0-EAEL3iLXyHZEQ9Km1LP61iuRv5tRkO6ngM79dN61LMz_fB12JUgrE2acwjkvit2CSjX_l3jxkTKAG0rF5T/s400/DSC01978.JPG" /></a>
I am sure that my youngest daughter has forgotten all about them. Next, I have a paper pieced heart to make before my guild meeting in two weeks. We are supposed to use it to make something and bring it in for show & tell. It has been several years since I did foundation paper piecing. I picked up an instruction sheet, just in case I can't remember. After that, I have two block of the month squares to do. Then, I can get back to last years block of the month. I still have to do sashing and corner stones and then a border. I will then get back to my Itty Bitty wall hanging.
I am also dreaming of starting a new project, but can't make up my mind as to what I want to start. I think I will carry on with a Christmas theme, as I have two Christmas wall hangings planned.
I have already booked a hotel in Houston for my girlfriend & I, for the International Quilt Festival that starts the end of October and runs until November 3rd. I can't believe it but we actually got into the Hilton Americas! It is right across the road from the convention centre and even has a skywalk to it. I can't believe it has been three years since we last went.
Some promises to myself, to stick to over the next year. Lose some weight (yes I know goals should be quantitative and easy to measure - but that is for me to know & everyone else to wonder about). Make my die cut mini storm at sea that I bought in Houston three years ago. Make at least one new jacket to wear to Houston. Quilt my Stonehenge floor tile quilt. The top has been done for about two years. (I will show you a picture of it next week!) All this and many more & I have just started into my busy season at work. I think February will be a crazy busy month, with March even worse and April, well lets not talk about April.
I am hosting my kindred group this Wednesday, so that should be fun. I also must finalize the agenda for the next guild meeting. (Did I mention that I took over as president in January?) I have had some really nice feedback on how my first meeting went. I hope I don't disappoint them this month.
I hope you all have a good sewing week, with not too many interruptions. Enjoy!
Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-44108282849893441172013-01-03T07:04:00.000-05:002013-01-03T07:06:09.386-05:00SickAfter the busy Christmas season, I managed to come down with a rotten cold. It started with a sore throat, moved into a head cold, with a stuffy nose and finally into my chest, so I am coughing like crazy. Needless to say, I have not managed to do any sewing. Sorry about that. I had planned on finishing the two sets of placemats. Then I had planned on doing a new project, a table quilt. The pattern is called images and was in the Australian on-line quilt magazine that I get. The fabric, I picked up at the boxing day sale at Thimbles & Things. After that it will be back to last year's block of the month, as I still have sashing, corner stones and borders to sew together. Then I must finish my Itty Bitty Pinwheels that are still covering my design wall. After that I hope to get back to my one fabric quilt. Then I hope to jump into a new project. So much sewing to do and so little time!Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-63187435371664902272012-12-22T08:41:00.003-05:002012-12-22T08:41:26.193-05:00Working Hard Or Hardly WorkingI have been off work for about four weeks now and what do I have to show for it? Well how about this?
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSEIiCIlA4Cr3Phf3gOsLLNYLTg3sci-iUMDwFiKiZi73rpph7jbRoUNQ8wDHWsKeSQTvQ_McIV0S4r2JJSxdlaEMMFTKsmJB-schTq48Zay769Eyvm6R0oP-3LUsyNBKPQnKWA8XSI2X9/s1600/DSC01964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSEIiCIlA4Cr3Phf3gOsLLNYLTg3sci-iUMDwFiKiZi73rpph7jbRoUNQ8wDHWsKeSQTvQ_McIV0S4r2JJSxdlaEMMFTKsmJB-schTq48Zay769Eyvm6R0oP-3LUsyNBKPQnKWA8XSI2X9/s400/DSC01964.JPG" /></a>
I finally got the ends finished and the blocking done. Here are a couple of close ups to show some detail.

What is with this? I thought this was supposed to be a quilting blog? Well I have to show why I don't have much quilting done! OK, how about this?
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN4QOyGfKg5CSNdhLS2Jz5Zz2bRvc4cMTOwTKkz1zydnRSoNvGEHgfUBdIsPvEGtvfxggtBZr0UD_VOSYQgnm7Lz1kgguFyM7lmdoFKRTRIy3_EiE0wuzaRdJpGQ8mIqi_6hBWy3R3-Ctu/s1600/DSC01968.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN4QOyGfKg5CSNdhLS2Jz5Zz2bRvc4cMTOwTKkz1zydnRSoNvGEHgfUBdIsPvEGtvfxggtBZr0UD_VOSYQgnm7Lz1kgguFyM7lmdoFKRTRIy3_EiE0wuzaRdJpGQ8mIqi_6hBWy3R3-Ctu/s400/DSC01968.JPG" /></a>
Four Christmas placemates! These are of the stack and wack variety. You put four fat quarters down and trim down to the size you want to finish with plus four sets of seam allowances (two inches if you use 1/4 inch seams). Then you slice out the stripes you want (plus seam allowances), then mix up the stripes by putting the top one on the bottom for the first one, 1st & 2nd on the bottom for the next one and then 1st, 2nd & 3rd on the bottom for the last one. Sew them together, pile them up again and cut the other way. Shuffle the stripes again, as you did before and then sew them back together. Then you just have to cut some backing and batting. I just sewed them right sides together, leaving a space open on one side to turn them. Then put the batting in, taking a bit of time to get them nice and flat and then quilted as desired. I also did a quilt line about 1/8 of an inch in from the edge, so that I didn't have to sew the opening shut by hand.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0rhQFtMjs3uEmf7IX_emBqtQYLQQnFtzTP6nx8sVO3jlbDhEnEVMut9d14hZmVOQ1rcwR1JMedTmEnKOZBOs44pCvsHXANOn5Py4jOLfrDKwINFUm9YdmGVh9qiDTXTteM5CDQmZGOAL5/s1600/DSC01972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0rhQFtMjs3uEmf7IX_emBqtQYLQQnFtzTP6nx8sVO3jlbDhEnEVMut9d14hZmVOQ1rcwR1JMedTmEnKOZBOs44pCvsHXANOn5Py4jOLfrDKwINFUm9YdmGVh9qiDTXTteM5CDQmZGOAL5/s400/DSC01972.JPG" /></a>
I made one more chenille rug. They are really addictive! That makes three, which is quite enough. I have two more sets of placemates to make, one for me and one for a present, so really only one has to be done in the next few days. I also have the fabric for a seasonal wall hanging that I hope to get done before New Years, as I go back to work on January 2.
Since I take over as president of my quilt guild on January 1st, I have also been spending time figuring out what we will be doing next year for 12 months. I have been concentrating on the first four months of the year, when I am very busy at work, so don't have enough spare time to figure anything out. I have also been working on an afghan that my sister had started many years ago. It is hexagons, so I couldn't resist! It makes nice work that I can do while sitting upstairs with my husband, rather than hiding away in my sewing room all the time. Now it is time to finish my baking. I have three more batches of cookie to do, as well as mincemeat tarts, so I had better get moving. I will also be sewing a few more gift bags in order to finish my wrapping. It might be a rather long day!
I hope you all have your Christmas projects finished! Try to take a little time off from busy schedules to get a little quilting done. Most of all enjoy the season!
Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-5022234323101216832012-12-02T21:04:00.003-05:002012-12-02T21:04:42.866-05:00Itty Bitty PinwheelsI finally got the squares for my "Itty Bitty Pinwheels" sewn together. The next step was to start cutting out the 1 1/2" squares to start making the pinwheels. You must use a small rotary cutter to do this. It seemed to take forever but I got the first four rows cut out and then sewn togethter. Here is a picture of my big square made up of 20 x 20 2 1/2" squares sewn together, with the first four rows of 1 1/2" itty bitty squares cut out of it.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ4stpZ9S5wOQRaI3rtQLFNISM5KwdNNGNUak3BsfINLM3ad-nf3mMd7GMFRzSx-Iq6uq5KlmDHMr_6Lt3WhhuNCOtGchxhDa4R3aedIToR1uklUM2R32NYyJAKcHKdJBy-BhMBRcutan9/s1600/DSC01956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ4stpZ9S5wOQRaI3rtQLFNISM5KwdNNGNUak3BsfINLM3ad-nf3mMd7GMFRzSx-Iq6uq5KlmDHMr_6Lt3WhhuNCOtGchxhDa4R3aedIToR1uklUM2R32NYyJAKcHKdJBy-BhMBRcutan9/s400/DSC01956.JPG" /></a>
Then here is a picture showing what those 76 squares look like sewn together compared to the size of my original square. When all the squares have been cut and added to this it will make a 21" square. I must be crazy! It will be 361 squares made up of 1,444 bits of material!
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFVrlh07LnbtVr2eQ-wpB1QrHGtICSULN5iDyc94JTaKMjrwV9nAOEUhffb6gIb-E3v0_CQRxuNRN46Xanh4xnZhyphenhyphenoU-lNoCIqTVB1Mf4FhW20ZONSQ-aq62pKhyphenhyphenVJjZR4LLccap3FNchK/s1600/DSC01957.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFVrlh07LnbtVr2eQ-wpB1QrHGtICSULN5iDyc94JTaKMjrwV9nAOEUhffb6gIb-E3v0_CQRxuNRN46Xanh4xnZhyphenhyphenoU-lNoCIqTVB1Mf4FhW20ZONSQ-aq62pKhyphenhyphenVJjZR4LLccap3FNchK/s400/DSC01957.JPG" /></a>
In my spare time I am making another chenille rug out of Stonehenge Magnolia panels. I have it about 2/3 sewn. I would have finished sewing it today, but ran out of thread. I will pick some more up in my travels tomorrow.

I also managed to finish crochetting the shawl I was working on. I just have to finish working in the ends and then will get it blocked and then will take a proper picture of it to share with you.
I have several Yule projects on the go and I just bought fabric for Patti Carey's "Baby Block" pattern of stacked up presents. I just hope that I have time to get it done before Christmas.
I am out two evenings and one whole day this week, so I hope I get some sewing time. At least I am done work until January, so that should help. Hope your projects are progressing well! Have a good week!
Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-50587750393886260392012-11-12T20:53:00.004-05:002012-11-12T20:53:46.110-05:00Sewing & SewingI cut squares of the new fabric for my background & have started sewing my squares together for my Itty Bitty Pinwheels. I am much happier with it now. The following picture shows it with the new squares. You will notice a white stripe about a third of the way in from the right side. That section has groups of four squares sewn together in rows. The larger part on the left only has two squares sewn together in the rows. I will keep sewing the twos into fours and then will join the fours into eights, etc. When I have the rows finished, I will then start joining the rows together. Then I will cut the border fabric and add my borders. Then the fun will start when I start cutting this whole thing up to make my pinwheels!

I have been working on the shawl I am crocheting. I finished the second set of pattern rows and am half way through the third set. I didn't bother taking a picture, but will when I finish the rows, before I start on the rounds.
Not too bad for a work week, with a night out for my kindred quilters group. I also made the mistake of starting to watch the 7th season of Criminal Minds on DVDs that I purchased a couple of weeks ago. Oh well, I will be finished work again in a few days and be able to get more sewing done to show you. I wish some of you would send me comments and pictures of what you are working on! Have a good week!

There is not enough difference between them. I have decided to add a new one. What do you think of the one in the following picture? I think I will replace the one closest to the new fabric. I will have to cut some squares and try it out. I have found taking a picture shows up problems before I notice them when just looking at my design wall.

I didn't get any actual sewing done this week. I was too busy working on a crochet project. It is going to be a shawl. It is a dusty blue, that looks nice with blue jeans. The 1st picture shows that it is longer than my bed. The 2nd shows that the ends are on an angle. The 3rd shows the main part of the pattern. I am on row 21 of about 43, so I have about half of the main part done, but after that there are still numerous rounds to add an all around border. This is a project that I picked up at the Creative Festival in Toronto last month.

I went exploring Amazon books last week and decided I couldn't do without Yoko Saito's book Japanese Quilting piece by piece (2006), Libby Lehman's Threadplay (1997) and Mary Parker's Sashiko Easy & Elegant Decorative Machine Embroidery (1999). They have all arrived and I am pleased with them. They are the other part of the reason that I didn't get any quilting done this week. I think that I will only be working for another week after this, so should manage to get back to important things like quilting! Have a good week and remember to enjoy whatever you are working on!

The first was the 4 fat quarter placemates. I hadn't planned on doing this but they were in "Quilters World" December 2012. In it they didn't do the easy cutting method, but they look the same. The colours didn't show up true on the picture I just took. They look more orange and light green, rather than red and green, but the picture does give you the idea of what they are. You cut out four 18" x 18" squares, slice them horizontally, rotate the colours and sew them back together. Then you slice them vertically, rotate them and sew them back together, trim the edges and a strip across the bottom (can be added to the backing to make them more decorative). This is what you end up with. I just need to cut out backing and batting sew them together and then quilt them. Very quick and easy!

I attended an open class at my local quilt store Tuesday night, and got instructions on how to make a chenille rug from three panels. I finished it late on Wednesday. I love it!

This is a Stonehenge panel from Northcott. I am really pleased with the way it turned out.

The other thing I worked on this week was 2 1/2" squares for my Itty Bitty Pinwheels. As usual I got carried away and ended up with 20 x 20 = 400 squares. I will go crazy sewing these together and then cutting the pinwheels out with the little template which is only 1 1/2" square. I played around with the pattern a bit and came up with this layout. I hope it will result in a nice pinwheel pattern when I am done. The print at the side will be my border fabric.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKIPArSD7M5mY6Ch8A090o3G-WKfmt3uatq6u4xUyctgBu9inGY4Yyiy3wBqTyFiUjiTt7LS-d1j8VRVv9mMyKYp1ZyYMJ0ScDUnVtxVuv3RaJcfaDSqOkEGmhNtY5C1VmGE_Dcg5AGv6X/s1600/DSC01938.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKIPArSD7M5mY6Ch8A090o3G-WKfmt3uatq6u4xUyctgBu9inGY4Yyiy3wBqTyFiUjiTt7LS-d1j8VRVv9mMyKYp1ZyYMJ0ScDUnVtxVuv3RaJcfaDSqOkEGmhNtY5C1VmGE_Dcg5AGv6X/s400/DSC01938.JPG" /></a>
Here is a close-up to let you see the border fabric better. I bought it back in May (2012) so it isn't too old!
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj-uZHD9_e96w4lOV6RJRNl93M9H7Dk5Npp_0ib4v8sIT8uyXH6fU5z8um-RwB3aXqUPvxQDshpowgYLSVZbqDg6ZuWt-pmHDRwUzcTCvB7mIHN6mY_WLY86s0Co8vzA5OqY7IgGxwblav/s1600/DSC01939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj-uZHD9_e96w4lOV6RJRNl93M9H7Dk5Npp_0ib4v8sIT8uyXH6fU5z8um-RwB3aXqUPvxQDshpowgYLSVZbqDg6ZuWt-pmHDRwUzcTCvB7mIHN6mY_WLY86s0Co8vzA5OqY7IgGxwblav/s400/DSC01939.JPG" /></a>
I am back at work for the next couple of weeks. I am hoping to have enough energy to sew a bunch of the 400 squares together and get the border cut and sewn on, but that might be a little optimistic! Then, I have to use my small cutter to cut it all into the 1 1/2" squares and then sew all of those together! Maybe I would do better sewing the sashing onto my blocks of the month? I will let you know next week! Have a good one and enjoy your sewing.

They are from Eleanor Burns Day & Night book. I had to change the sizes, etc. and cut 1 cm squares out of the corners for an inset little square that is part of the table legs. It took me quite a while to quilt them and then forever to get the binding right in those corners. There is an outside corner, then 1 cm away is an inside corner and then 1 cm away another outside corner. I did two practice ones and then tried the real thing. Several corners took a couple of tries to get them right. I made good use of my seam ripper!

The close up picture makes the corner look crooked, but it is the way it is hanging from my design wall. I couldn't take another picture as I no longer have the runners in my house. They went home with my daughter this afternoon, along with 14 cupcakes and some Yorkshire pudding. She was happy!
My next project is going to be a chenille rug, made from several Stonehenge panels. I missed the class for this, so am planning on going to the sewing night at my local quilt shop to get some help. I just have a few questions, like how far apart your sewing lines should be and if you cut between the lines of sewing before or after you bind the edges. The owner has this open class most Tuesday nights, where she will answer any questions you have about quilting. She says it is a fun night with lots of laughter, so I am looking forward to it. I am hoping to have the rug all finished by Wednesday night, so should have time to start something else. I am thinking of my "Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheels - 1" Finished". The finished size of the project is supposed to be 10" x 10". I think I will make mine a bit bigger than that by using more squares to begin with. It should be fun to play with.
I go back to work next week for a couple of weeks, so that will be a good time to get back to the sashing on my block of the month project. After that I am supposed to have another six weeks off, so will have lots of time to play. It sounds good to me. As well as giving me more time to sew, I will also have lots of spare time to get ready for Yule this year, which will be nice for a change!
I hope your projects are coming along nicely! Have a fun week!

Housework, laundry, yard work, shopping for yarn to finish a project of my sisters, a trip to Mount Forest to visit my brother, a girl's dinner out with friends & a bus trip to Toronto to the Creative Festival have all worked against me getting any sewing done. I did get the three table runners for my daughter layered and pinned, all ready to quilt. I have hopes of starting the quilting tomorrow. I will try to have pictures for next week. The festival was lots of fun, with lots to see. I now have a couple of more projects to do, in all my spare time! Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-6195818582181788612012-10-07T22:30:00.000-04:002012-10-08T08:28:21.732-04:00Table Runners Get AttentionWhat a great two weeks! (Sorry I missed blogging last Sunday.) Let's see...I helped with more painting of our deck, went to London & stayed with my sister for a couple of days, including the Ingersol quilt show, finally got blinds for the living room window, did more painting on the deck (It is a big deck, 8' x 16' where you walk out from the kitchen with eight foot wide stairs leading down to our patio and the one end of the 16' lenth joins a 16' x 16' seating area.), managed to cook a Canadian Thanksgiving dinner for company, did part of the Images Studio Tour and even got to sew!
I finished sewing the frames around my block of the month squares! Then I numbered all of them (on a paper pinned to them - letter (for the row) & number (for the column) so I would know the correct order they go in. I was finally able to get them off my design wall!
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXCrZ1mMbCCrt36A0C1c7PmdbDZzdwyPnGji1bPOlzgcqHMdjVqqZt_OUuMumOMVrBfXVZhvUA7swwq7cVc_cnoLWW_K0q4Nw2Gv8GkAPOxuIzCIAL1UHwGLgXFbQZ6UGQekTcMKdtUcqe/s1600/DSC01906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXCrZ1mMbCCrt36A0C1c7PmdbDZzdwyPnGji1bPOlzgcqHMdjVqqZt_OUuMumOMVrBfXVZhvUA7swwq7cVc_cnoLWW_K0q4Nw2Gv8GkAPOxuIzCIAL1UHwGLgXFbQZ6UGQekTcMKdtUcqe/s400/DSC01906.JPG" /></a>
After that the table runners for our youngest daughter won my attention. The long one for her coffee table is an Eleanor Burns Day & Night two colour pattern, and the two end table runners are made from the leftovers. She really wants them and has been waiting since we bought the fabric in April (2012). I had to put the year as I have projects that have been waiting much longer for my attention! Anyway, all three runner tops are now complete.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix5ah8P8t_rpFPIQbVffbVhswDvpWgZaLN6DoHYo-SocEhNU_jc-SjQ5uNjqZAYMdKTOfkkLxPM_zh1eM1lP15KEXtGElPSpdzYT0UZAgNM35qZPFcUOOgBO3NDoeR5aZUV6niYAvQKhf6/s1600/DSC01922.JPG" imageanchor="1" style=""><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix5ah8P8t_rpFPIQbVffbVhswDvpWgZaLN6DoHYo-SocEhNU_jc-SjQ5uNjqZAYMdKTOfkkLxPM_zh1eM1lP15KEXtGElPSpdzYT0UZAgNM35qZPFcUOOgBO3NDoeR5aZUV6niYAvQKhf6/s400/DSC01922.JPG" /></a>
This coming week I will try to get the runners layered and quilted, then there will just be the binding to do with the funny corners and I will have them done (hopefully in time for show & tell at my October guild meetings). The "funny corners" have a square (1 cm x 1 cm) clipped out, so when I do the binding I have to make a regular outside mitred corner, then an inside corner and then another regular corner. It wouldn't be so bad if they were spread out a bit more, but they are really jammed together. Hopefully I will have pictures by next week to show how they turned out. I only have three weeks left of my vacation, so I better get moving! So many projects and so little time! Have a great week!
Eliz.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07161684869792046543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1373070425021841728.post-32557113280328333432012-09-23T21:00:00.002-04:002012-09-23T21:00:33.387-04:00Last Hexagon FlowersI am finally finished making hexagons. The total is 91 flowers = 637 hexagons. It measures 39" from side to side. The hexagons are all sewn together and I have picked out a fabric to go around them. I will applique the hexagons on to six inch wide strips that are joined together at 60 degree angles. The fabric has a navy blue background with silver and royal blue dots all over it. I will then layer & quilt it. The binding will match the strips. It will be a table runner for my dining room table when finished. The following picture doesn't do justice to the background fabric. The silver dots just make it look gray and dull, which it isn't. I will try for a better picture in daylight the next sunny day we get.

I only got borders sewn on five more of my block of the month squares. My only excuse is that I did read all three books in the Hunger Games series. I found them rather disturbing but couldn't not continue reading as I needed to find out how everything turned out.

I will use the dark brown fabric in the corners of the frames as corner stones, with a yellow batik as sashing and the first border. A multicolour batik will be the final border. The colours in it that stand out are the five colours that I used as frames. Hopefully it will tie everything together. These are shown in the following picture.

I have a lot planned (non sewing) for the next week, so am not sure how much sewing I will get done. I am really hoping to finish the hexagon table runner as I am already planning my next handwork. How many of you have done a Cathedral Windows quilt? I am going to start small and try a throw pillow to see if I like doing it. No, I haven't forgotten my youngest daughter's table runners, but they will wait for my block of the month quilt to get sewn. I will fit them in, before I start quilting it. It has been working out not too badly machine sewing during the day and hand sewing in the evenings. I just got behind on my machine sewing this week as I was reading during the day as well. Enjoy your week & I hope you get some sewing time!
